About Us

In 2014 Dick Griffin (who at the time was President of Blackheath and Bromley Harriers AC), and his two close friends, Lisa Richards and Jo Clarke, talked about the possibility of starting a voluntary running course to encourage people to take up running.

Joined by their shared love of running, and a desire to help non-runners discover health, fitness and the fun that running in a supportive and motivational group could bring, they decided to start a group to help people achieve what seemed almost impossible for them – taking part in a 5km parkrun in 9-10 weeks.

In September 2014, having placed a few posters around Norman Park advertising the course, fourteen people turned up on a brisk Autumnal morning and Zero to Hero Runners was born. That first course was a massive success… all participants completed the parkrun….and loved it!

Word of mouth spread, and the second course brought 20 people. By the end of 2015 more than 150 previously self confessed non-runners had taken part in the parkrun, and eight more coaches had qualified to help with the growing numbers.

Graduates of the course now come back weekly to go on an ‘improvers’ run of four or more miles at a brisker, more challenging pace. Nowadays there are even groups running up to 8-10 miles.

In December 2015 the group was nominated for Sports Club of the Year at the London Sports Awards, and then in 2018, the club became accredited by England Athletics. Today our members compete in 10kms, half marathons and marathons up and down the country and beyond.

After a couple of years of thinking I’d like to start running and an abortive attempt at couch to 5k I finally listened to various friends and decided to give Z2H a try! Good decision – I found many like-minded people who hadn’t done any sporting activity since school, and a team of encouraging and supportive leaders who promised that we would manage 5k in our own way at the end of the course – and we did! After that an even lovelier world of friendship, organised group runs and sociable events opened up. What a club – do give it a go.

How do you describe Zero to Hero’s running club? Inclusive, non-judgemental, friendly, knowledgeable, supportive, sociable, motivational, caring….the lists of positives is endless. I never thought of myself as a runner but I run several times a week, not fast, not great distances but with friends who motivate me to get out there. The beginners course enabled that and the club members and leaders mean that I now call myself a runner!

I signed up for the Beginners course in January 2018 with the aim of getting some fitness back and to meet some local people as I was relatively new to the area. I was a lapsed runner of some years but have never been a member of a running club as I always thought that was for the serious elite runners. I couldn’t have been more wrong! The club is so inclusive and encouraging of all levels. Progression and improvement is entirely your own choice so there is no pressure but support is always there from both leaders and other club members. And as an added bonus I now have lots of new Hero friends!
